What is Animal Assisted Support & Learning?

Animal Assisted Support (AAS) and Animal Assisted Learning (AAL) are structured, purposeful approaches that involve working alongside animals to support wellbeing, learning and personal development.

I will often use specific resources that are age and learner appropriate which clients are able to take home.

Animals have an incredible ability to help people feel calm, accepted and present in the moment. Their non-judgemental nature can make it easier to build trust, develop confidence and explore new skills.

Sessions are designed around each individual or group and may support:

Emotional wellbeing / Confidence and self-esteem / Communication skills / Emotional regulation / Building healthy relationships / Problem solving / Resilience / Teamwork / Motivation / Personal development / Learning through practical experiences / Mindfulness and connection with nature

Benefits of Animal Assisted Support & Learning

Rather than focusing on problems or limitations, Animal Assisted Support (AAS) and Animal Assisted Learning (AAL) take a strengths-based approach. By creating positive experiences alongside animals, people are supported to recognise their own abilities, build confidence and discover what they can achieve.

Working with animals can create a calm, engaging and supportive environment where people can develop a wide range of skills at their own pace. Time spent alongside animals can help reduce stress and anxiety, encourage emotional regulation and promote mindfulness, while also creating opportunities to develop empathy, compassion and stronger communication skills.

Animal-assisted experiences can also encourage motivation and engagement, supporting positive changes in behaviour and helping people become more confident in trying new things. Activities with animals can promote physical activity while developing teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Most importantly, AAS and AAL provide opportunities for people to experience success, build resilience and develop greater independence. Learning in a relaxed and enjoyable environment can help make new experiences feel more accessible and meaningful, while positive interactions with animals can create lasting memories and a sense of achievement.

Being outdoors and spending time with animals can also offer an opportunity to reconnect with nature, slow down and be present in the moment. Whether the focus is learning, personal development, emotional wellbeing or simply enjoying a positive experience, animal-assisted activities can provide a supportive space in which people can grow, connect and thrive.
